Dyslexia by a neuropsychologist

At the video, Juan Àrias who is a Goa Clinic neurpshycologist, appears. He talks about dyslexia and describes it like a learning disorder that belongs to specific language difficulties, specifically reading and writing.. As he says, it is a neurobiological disorder with genetics and hereditary causes. That means that exists a neuroanatomical system that justifies people’s reading difficulties, for example, confusing letters among other problems that could appear. What means that it isn’t a children issue, dyslexia cant be healed, therefore, as he says, a person with dyslexia, will always have it. However, he remarks that people with dyslexia can work and practice to find out their strategies, solutions, alternatives or adaptations that supply or improve difficulties and achieve an optimum reading and writing processing level, quite normalized. So, dyslexia is not related to intellectual level (although many times they believe it is) or even exist school failure. As soon as the logopedic and/or phycopedagogic diagnosis and intervention get done, bigger will be the possibilities of achieve a quite normalized reading and decreasing difficulties on academic level.

He distinguish the importance of working with the familiar and educational environment. He also mentions the existence of comorbidity between dyslexia and dyscalculia or dysgraphia.

Watching this video, I have asked myself what percentage of people with dyslexia end up having school failure. According to the Antonio Alayón Neurological Center, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, more than 65% of the cases of school failure are due to a misdiagnosis in cases of dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and dysorthography (Dislexia – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 23 de octubre de 2018 )
